First released in 1982, the design of these coins always features the Temple of Heaven, as well as the year of issue and the coins face value. Coins issued in the year 2000 or before will have a lower face value of 100 yuan.

The Panda, being the national animal of China, appears on the reverse of the coin. The design of this changes annually and will vary between featuring a lone Panda or numerous examples of this charming animal. This helps make the 30 gram gold Panda coins popular with investors, but also with collectors wishing to have each unique design.
